The old thrills can’t satisfy you anymore

You’ve collected everything you could afford

But you were much more fun when you were poor

Remember the shabby house, remember the empty drive

When you actually reeked of being alive

Because the passion leaked out of your ass

Residual ambitions from your bankrupt past

We were better off hungry, sleeping on the floor

You were so ambitious when desperate and

Much more fun when you were poor

Remember walking to the bar just to watch TV

Ever aimlessly content just sitting right next to me

Before some insatiable beast traded you her heart

You converted people with your love, your joy, and your spark

Now that you’ve foreclosed on the selfless times

Your poetry, once a thing of substance, has fallen so sadly behind the cars,

the boat, the clothes

Your friends were replaced by new leather shoes

And you may look dashing now but I remember when you were
