Sometimes my baby goes away

In the blink of an eye on an ordinary day

I’m right there beside her but all at a loss

No way to reach her, no way to get across

Was it something I did?

Was it something I said?

She lies on the bed with her face to the wall

To see her tumble and fall

Sometimes my baby takes a little trip

She gives me no warning, just gives me the slip

I hold her and kiss her and whisper her name

But she’s somewhere else, I’m right out of the frame

Nothing to do with my loving at all

I wish I could take out the knives in her head

Like a stone in a pond she falls

I listen all night to the sound of the sea

The tide inches out and the tide inches in

I follow the moon sinking down through the trees

Until she rises again
